Bioengineering Section Conference, Jan 1999

The 5th “Bioengineering in Ireland” conference was  held on the 30th and 31st January, 1999 and 43 oral presentations were made in sessions devoted to  Orthopaedics, Biomaterials, Vascular Tissue, Hard Tissues  and Biomedical Technology. The conference chairman was  Dr. Lee whose Opening Address was entitled  “Bioengineering: Times Past, Present and Future“. The  5th Samuel Haughton Lecture was delivered by Mr.  Michael Stephen MSc (Bioeng.), ER.C.S.I., of the Mater,  Temple Street and Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospitals.
Entitled “From Heel to Toe“, his lecture emphasised the  biomechanical basis of foot surgery and has been  published in the Journal (Ir. J. Med. Sci., 1999; 168: 127- 132). Mr. Stephens was the first Samuel Haughton  Lecturer to receive the Academy Silver Medal. The
Academy Bronze Medal, for the best presentation, was  won by

This work, carried out in collaboration with Mr. Damian  McCormack, investigated the incidence and kinetics of  sports-related fractures of the distal radius in children. The  abstracts will be published in the Journal.
