Anaesthesia in Ireland: the first 100 years

Dr. Declan J Warde will deliver the 2022 Presidential Lecture

Summary:

I regard this discovery as one of the most important of this century. It will rank with vaccination, and other of the great benefits that medical science has bestowed on man’.

So wrote John MacDonnell, surgeon to the Richmond Hospital, Dublin after the administration of the first general anaesthetic in Ireland on January 1st 1847. This lecture will tell the stories of the Irish men and women who contributed to the development of anaesthesia from that day until December 1946, the month in which the inaugural scientific meeting of the Section of Anaesthetics of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland took place. The use of ether and chloroform, the first anaesthetic appointments in the country in the latter part of the 19th century and the introduction of regional and intravenous anaesthetic techniques will also be discussed.
