RAMI Research Awards 2022_Monday 25th September 2023

The Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland in association with the Irish Journal of Medical Science hosted the RAMI Research Awards 2022.  The event was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  

The three (3) shortlisted papers and winning papers in each category are as follows:

Biomedical Science

  • Proteomics profiling identifies extracellular vesicles’ cargo associated with tumour cell induced platelet aggregation (Niamh McNamee, Laura Rodriguez de la Fuente, Maria Jose Santos-Martinez, Lorraine O’Driscoll)

Prof. James Jones presented a medal to Dr Damir Vareslija for the winning paper in the Biomedical Science category, “Mapping molecular subtype specific alterations in breast cancer brain metastases identifies clinically relevant vulnerabilities”.

Endocrinology

  • Parent and Child Perceptions of Physical Activity with Type 1 (Susan Giblin, Paul Scully, Niall Dalton, Alison McCaffrey, Muiriosa Connolly, Clodagh O’Gorman)
  • Diabetes Mitotane Targets Lipid Droplets to Induce Lipolysis in Adrenocortical Carcinoma (Kate M Warde, Yi Jan Lim, Eduardo Ribes Martinez, Felix Beuschlein, Paula O’Shea , Constanze Hantel , Michael Conall Dennedy)
  • Re interpreting growth hormone response to hypoglycaemia (U A Khan, F Y Wong, S Azam, O Blake, A M Murphy, O M Neylon, C S O’Gorman)

The medal was awarded to Dr Kate M. Warde for the winning paper in the Endocrinology category, “Diabetes Mitotane Targets Lipid Droplets to Induce Lipolysis in Adrenocortical Carcinoma”.

Public Health Medicine/ Epidemiology

The medal was presented by Prof. James Jones to Dr Caitriona Kelly for the winning paper in the Public Health Medicine/epidemiology category, “Screen-detected ductal carcinoma in situ 2008-2020 An observational study”.

General Practice

Prof. Jones presented a medal to Professor Valerie Murphy for the winning paper in the General Practice category, “The evaluation of a training course to enhance intellectual disabilities and mental health awareness amongst General Practitioners attending police stations”.

Medical Microbiology

Prof. James Jones presented the winner Dr Daniel Hare with a medal for the winning paper in the Medical Microbiology category, “Repeated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in an overcrowded Irish emergency department elucidated by whole-genome sequencing”.

Oncology

Prof.  James Jones presented a medal to Dr Kieron White, who accepted on behalf of Dr Annette T. Byrne for the winning paper in the Oncology category, “Identification, validation and biological characterisation of novel glioblastoma tumour microenvironment subtypes: implications for precision immunotherapy”.

Ophthalmology

Prof. James Jones presented the medal to Dr Julia Zhu, for the winning paper in the Ophthalmology category, “Electrophysiology-Guided Genetic Characterisation Maximises Molecular Diagnosis in an Irish Paediatric Inherited Retinal Degeneration Population“.

The Ophthalmology category was kindly sponsored by Santen.  The event was attended by their representative Mr. Declan Daly, accompanied by Mr. Neil Goode.

Prof. James Jones presented a medal to the winner, Dr Colm Healy for the winning paper in the Psychiatry category, “Person-Centered Trajectories of Psychopathology From Early Childhood to Late Adolescence”.
