Surgery Section Registrar’s Prize Meeting, April 1988

15/04/1988 in Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, Dublin 2

A meeting of the Surgical Section took place in the Royal College of Surgeons on Friday, 15th April, 1988. This was the Annual Registrars’ Prize Meeting which was as well attended and as keenly contested as usual. After the minutes had been read the President of the Section, Mr. David Lane took the chair. Twelve papers were presented and each paper was both interesting and stimulated a lively discussion.

At the end of the meeting the President, Mr. David Lane, thanked all the speakers. He paid tribute to the excellent presentations and discussions by each of the speakers and he gave credit to the quality of the research that had been carried out. This was particularly notable in view of the fact that 10 out of the 12 papers which had been accepted out of a total of 26 submissions were from Ireland.

After the meeting the Council of the Surgical Section, after some deliberation, selected the winner of the Registrars’ Prize. This was awarded to Mr. R. C. Stuart from the Department of Surgery, St. James’s Hospital for his paper entitled “Xanthine Oxidase Inhibition with Allopurinol prevents Gastric Stress Ulceration without alteration of Gastric pH in an Experimental Model”.
